He died in a plane crash in a tragic plane crash that struck him down in 1959 at age 22.

Although he was young and famous married early on at the age of 22, Buddy Holly did not have any children with his only wife, Maria Elena Holly. 

Buddy proposed to Maria Elena Santiago on his first date. 

She was a receptionist four years older than Holly, and they were married two months later in 1958.

Elena did not attend Holly”s funeral because she had also suffered a miscarriage. Maria still owns the rights to Holly’s name, trademarks and other intellectual property.

Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Texas.

Buddy was the fourth and youngest child in his family; Holly was nicknamed “Buddy” by his mother.

His mother always felt that his given name was too big for her little boy. Holly altered the form of his last name, which would later result from a misspelling in his first recording contract.

Buddy Holly’s wife Maria Elena Holly disappeared and married later her second husband to start living in Puerto Rico.

After Holly’s death, Maria Elena Holly went on to have three children with her second husband, whom she eventually divorced.

She lives in Dallas, Texas and works to preserve Buddy Holly’s legacy. In 2010, Maria co-founded the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation with Peter Bradley.

María Elena’s mother passed away when she was 22 years old.

In 1953, Maira’s father sent her to live with her aunt (Provi Garcia).

She worked as a receptionist for music publisher Peermusic. As a receptionist, Maria Elena probably first met Buddy in August 1957 when as rising stars, he and the Crickets first visited Peer Southern Music in the Brill Building at 1619 Broadway.
