Fortune worked at a local ski resort as a singer when the original tenor of the Statler Brothers Lew DeWitt heard him sing. When Lew DeWitt was suffering from Crohn’s disease and needed a temporary replacement, he asked Fortune to come to audition for the band in Nashville. Fortune performed his first show with the Statler Brothers on January 28, 1982, in Savannah, Georgia. He joined the group permanently in August of 1982 when DeWitt was unable to return to the stage.
Fortune sang tenor for the Statler Brothers for 21 years, and wrote several number one songs that were recorded by the Statler Brothers, including Elizabeth, Too Much on My Heart, and My Only Love. When other members of the Statler Brothers (Don, Harold and Phil) retired in 2002, he continued to perform, but as a solo artist. In 2015 he released Hits & Hymns produced by Ben Isaacs.

Jimmy and The Statler Brothers were enlisted into the GMA (Gospel Music Association) Hall of Fame on October 29, 2007, and enlisted on the CMA (Country Music Association) Hall of Fame on June 29, 2008.
After the Statler Brothers retreated from doing music on October 26, 2002, Jimmy took the opportunity to begin a solo career to share new music with his fans. He debuted with a solo CD, When One Door Closes, that was released in August 2003 on Audium/Koch. Jimmy then released a gospel album, I Believe, in June 2005, a Christmas CD, Feels Like Christmas, in 2006, a live concert DVD, in 2007 a country CD, “Windows” in 2009, “Lessons” in 2012, and “Hits and Hymns” CD and DVD through Spring House Productions in 2015.
